ADNOC's Newest AI Deal Goes Around Microsoft, Straight to OpenAI
Abu Dhabi's national oil company signed a multi-year deal on November 2 to run OpenAI's agent platform across its oilfields and trading desk, using G42's own infrastructure instead of Microsoft's. For the past two ADIPECs, Microsoft was the company standing between ADNOC and OpenAI's models. This time it isn't in the room.
What Was Actually Agreed
On November 2, at the ADIPEC conference in Abu Dhabi, ADNOC signed a multi-year partnership with OpenAI and G42 — making the state oil company, by its own description, the first energy company to deploy OpenAI's Frontier agent platform. The deal covers two things: AI agents that pull data from thousands of wells and hundreds of surface facilities to build integrated field-development plans, which ADNOC says could shrink planning from months to hours, and a second layer that links production, refining, logistics and trading, estimating the commercial value of a barrel of crude before it's extracted. An OpenAI cybersecurity product, Daybreak Blue, is also part of the package. G42's UAE subsidiary, Inception42, supplies the sovereign infrastructure the models run on. Neither side disclosed a dollar figure or a full rollout timeline, and both say humans still sign off on consequential decisions.
Why Now
OpenAI's models had already reached ADNOC once before, as a component inside ENERGYai, a subsurface tool that AIQ, ADNOC's joint venture with G42, built with Microsoft at ADIPEC 2024. This is different: OpenAI itself is now a named, direct signatory, and the deployment runs on G42's own infrastructure rather than Microsoft's Azure. As the timeline below shows, each of the last three ADIPECs added a layer to ADNOC's AI stack, and this year's layer is the first one that doesn't route through Microsoft.
The timing also lines up with something outside ADNOC entirely: the same week, OpenAI was courting UAE investors for a funding round reported at up to $20 billion, and signed three other Abu Dhabi agreements alongside this one, covering government, enterprise and an investment-analysis project with sovereign wealth fund Mubadala. Reading the ADNOC deal as part of OpenAI buying goodwill with the capital it needs is an interpretation, not something either side stated — commentary on the fundraising itself has noted the business agreements and the capital raise aren't contractually linked — but the two events sharing a week, a city and a G42 subsidiary is a fact, not a theory.
Who It Affects
Sultan Al Jaber, ADNOC's group CEO, called it "a major step towards connecting intelligence across our entire business." For Microsoft, the deal doesn't end its ADNOC relationship — last year's agent-deployment contract keeps running, and it still holds a minority stake in G42 — but it loses its position as the only channel through which ADNOC gets OpenAI's technology. For other national oil companies watching from Riyadh to Houston, ADNOC going directly to a frontier lab, rather than through a hyperscaler's enterprise sales team, is a template worth testing. And for OpenAI, landing an oil major as a customer is a hedge against a criticism it hears constantly: that its biggest costs are compute and power. Altman himself, asked recently what OpenAI's hardest problem is, answered in one word: "Energy."
What to Watch Next
Whether ADNOC or OpenAI ever names a dollar figure, a start date, or which part of the trading desk goes live first; whether Microsoft's own ADNOC agent contract from 2025 visibly overlaps or competes with this one; and whether OpenAI's Gulf funding round actually closes anywhere near the reported $20 billion — which would be the clearest sign of whether deals like this one are paying for themselves.
